How do you measure a year in the life?

The beginning of my love for musicals

When I was little, I hated movie musicals. Most of the things I could watch at that age were probably Disney movies, which obviously had songs in the scenes. I remember that every time a character began to sing, I thought: “it was going so well thus far…”

I was really bored when the songs came into the picture. There must have been exceptions, of course, like with The Lion King, but in general it was something that I didn’t like.

My perception of musicals totally changed when my dad (a musical lover) bought Rent on BluRay. I was in my teenage years when I saw it and started to love musicals.

What moved Rent in me to have a greater awareness of music? It’s not even like I could relate to them. A group of 20 year-olds bohemians with quite a few financial problems; living in the magical and hated city of New York. Perhaps, tastes only change with age?

I remember that in a singing class, they talked about a ceremony in which they were going to sing Rent’s most famous song: “A Year In The Life”. Some didn’t remember the musical very well and began to wonder: “Oh, is it the one that is very sad with people who have HIV?”

I rolled my eyes.
